                                       Emerson Presentation Notes Day 3&4
On one of the other presentations a classmate said that Emerson is trying to get it thought or head that  it's ok to be different. And don't be like everyone else just because you feel like you have to fit in and try to put yourself in a position that you are not. Also to let people know the real you. And there is a reason why we were all born to be different
                                        Emerson's Presentations Day 2

In one of the presentations I got off that we are who we are and no one can change that especially other people around us. And there is a reason why we were born to be different.

                                                 Emerson Presentation Day 1
The first presentation was of Joseph and David doing a card trick using quotes from Emerson's story. Joseph and David used what they liked to do and put it in the presentation. I thought that their presentation was one of a kind especially since this involved card tricks and Emerson. And I feel that what i got off their presentation was that to be yourself.

The second presentation what i got off it was you are you and no one can be who your are. Nobody in this world can be you or look like you or have your personality.

The third presentation what I got off is that Emerson is trying to tell us is to be original and don't be a follower. Nowadays that there is social media, and all these challenges go on and most people do it just to fit in. Don't be a follower.

The fourth presentation was Emerson's way of telling us to be proud of who we are and that you are you and no one can change that but overall we are all amazing in different ways.
                                                               My Emerson
In my group we are planning to make a poster with Emerson's quotes. The poster will have pictures of the quotes and next to it, it will have a translation of what we think the quote means to us and what we think it means to Emerson. Also on how we think Emerson is trying to say to his readers.

                                     An Earth Shattering Fart
My response to the "A Sound of Thunder"  is that at first i didn't find anything interesting about it. But as soon as I kept on reading I noticed that in the story there was a time machine and I thought that it was interesting that the people could go in time machines and kill dinosaurs. The story kept on getting better and better. I still haven't finished everything but I kinda have an idea in towards what way is the story going.

                                                        Emerson said it

  • "Without abolishing our arms, magazines, commissaries, and carriages, until, in imitation of the Roman custom, the soldier should receive his supply of corn, grind it in his hand-mill, and bake his bread himself."
  • "The foolish face of praise"
  • "They do not seem to me to be such; but if I am the Devil's child, I will live then from the Devil"
  • "But these impulses may be from below, not from above."
  • 'Ah, so you shall be sure to be misunderstood.'
                                                     Emerson for the Young Buck
Reading "Self Reliance" I have learned a lot especially from Emerson he has a lot to say and has a different way of thinking. I think the way he expresses things make you focus more on what he is talking about. Some of the points he makes in the story make sense like"oh I know what you are talking about", but then there are some of those points he makes like what the fuck is he talking about. I like the fact that the topics he talks about he puts in so much thoughts into what he is thinking about.

                                                                 I'm Self-Reliant
I read half of it but it was too long. Also I didn't understand shit.
Something Interesting About the Book I'm Reading
The book I'm reading now is about a kid who has big dreams. But like always there is an obstacle in the way. But in this story the obstacle is MONEY. He wants to go to 4 year university and become a teacher. His parents work in the fields everyday and during his childhood he missed like 1 year of school because he had to support his parents and help his family get money. I thought that it was sad because he had to move place to place to follow the crops up in California. So far that's what I've read.
                                                             Author in Progress
I need to work on paying closer attention to the story because I get lost while reading the story. Also I need to work on finding out what are the main ideas of stories or syntax or anything else.

                                               Choice of Literature Analysis #3
The book I'm planning to read is the book Reaching Out by Francisco Jimenez. I find his books really interesting, because his books tell really important chapters of his life and how many struggles he had to face in order to achieve what he wanted. In my perspective I can just feel all his pain leaving behind his family in order to accomplish his dreams, spending Christmas by himself in his dorm in New York while his family is back in California. There were happy times in his books like getting married having kids, and there were sad times like not having enough money to buy a plane ticket to go back to California and see his family. But also he was raised here, here in Santa Maria California. I could sort of relate to his stories because my parents work in the strawberry fields for 10 hours and 6 days a week. I find him as an inspiration.

                                                 Sentences from the class

In the end, Hillary illuminated the people by corresponding Donald Trump's statements. Donald Trump  probe's was running out of air. Hillary was earnest about her statement, while Donald Trump.

                                                  Letter on Big Question

                Dear..................................

Hello. I have a really big question. I'm really interested in learning about the Indian culture. I just think that India is a really spectacular place to visit. Hopefully when older I get to visit this place. I would really like to visit the Taj Mahal someday I just think that the story how the Taj Mahal was built is a beautiful love story. But anyways the big question is that last time I went to Universal Studios and I saw a lot of Indian women. I noticed that most of them had a red dot on the center of their forehead. But then later on I saw a lady that had a black dot in the middle of her forehead. What is the dot and what does it mean? Also I would like to know what the differences are between the black and red dot? But then as I kept on walking around the theme park I also noticed that they also had red stuff on their parting of their hair and a little bit dropping down their forehead to. What is that and why is it their? Also I noticed that most of them had piercings everywhere on their face and pieces of jewelry hanging everywhere I would like to know what does that mean. I'm a really curious person so that's why I ask so many questions. I could go on asking so many questions about India but this is what I really want to know for now.

                                             RESPECT MY AUTHORITY
I would say that a authority figure could be a mom, dad, teacher, or even police officer or anything else. But the way I would describe a authority figure is to support myself to try to be the best. Also that they will be there for everything. Also the fact that they will try everyday to make you feel better about who you are. Also I see this saying that says that there is no other person in this planet that could look like you or be you. And just seeing this makes me feel so much better like you are unique and that you are worth it. Also that there is only one you just one. Like sometimes I feel that the year we live in, people are so judgmental. They talk without knowing. On Instagram I saw a girl post this "SOCIETY: Be yourself , SOCIETY: Not like that " I thought that it was so true. I would say my mom is one of the best authority figures because even though she works hard everyday she still tries to communicate with me everyday no matter what even if she is dead tired. I know that because every weekend or when we eat or something she tells me to work hard for everything. Even before she leaves work at 5 in the morning she tells me to behave in school and respect my teachers.I personally think that everybody should have a authority figure.

                                                           My Yoda
My ideal mentor would be a person that when I ask a certain question won't think that I'm stupid for asking that certain question. Also a person I feel will give me a honest opinion and answer fully their thought to my question to the question that I'm asking. Also I remember that I would have mentors that would just sit around and not ask a single thing but would just sit around.

                                             First Impression of The Pedestrian
For some reason I think everything we have read so far in class seems like the character is dreaming. But also I thought that the story started off so mysterious. What I also thought was sketchy was that in the story I also noticed that there are 3 words that describe death in the introduction to the story. I feel like this story is going to be really odd.

                                               Observation to Literature Book
The book I'm reading is Taking Hold by Francisco Jimenez. So far by the character which is also the author, well he is a really hard worker. He is so determined to keep on going no  matter how many obstacles are in his way. He is also a very strong young man he was 23 years old during that time. But I noticed that at times he was very sad and depressed and me myself reading the book got depressed at some times in the story. A main part of the story I remember is that he left his mother, girlfriend, and siblings behind in California. The reason is because he was offered a scholarship to go to Columbia University which is in New York. And to top it off his family was dirt-poor so they couldn't afford anything. When Christmas came around he didn't even have the chance to head back home because he couldn't afford a plane ticket. So he was myself in his dorm room on Christmas

                                                                  My Aeries
I got a B on my test. I tried my best on the test but I was expecting to get a C on it I was surprised because since elementary I always had trouble writing. But then I actually remember that I took notes and paid attention while you gave the lecture. So I think doing that helped a lot. I think the reason I received this grade is because of the notes and that I also paid attention to the stories. Overall I think that the work I did paid of so I think I do deserve the B. All the work I've been doing in Dr.Preston's class I think I have tried to keep up and not fall behind and I think I deserve a B not an A because I haven't done all the blogs and and done the videos but not a C because I think I have been doing the work a lot.

                                                  Literature Analysis Questions #1
1.The plot of this novel is that there is a girl that decided to mute herself because she saw her dad kill her mother. And at the same time she meets this guy who's dad is dying because he has cancer.

2.I think that the theme of the novel is that no matter how hard things are someone out there has it worse. Another theme I came up with is that be strong because someone out there cares and loves you no matter what.

3. I feel that this girl gets up having such a horrible feeling everyday knowing that her father murdered her mother. Also she even witnessed it with her own eyes. She always seemed so depressed but who wouldn't be. She always want to talk with the other guy who's father is dying because of cancer. But he, he always wakes up and wonders if this day could be the day that he loses his dad. He even doesn't get sleep because he is scared if his dad might die overnight so he wakes up very tired. When he talks he seems that a big piece of him is missing. He always wants to be drunk so he would forget the fact that his dad id dying because every time he thinks of that he cries and has a panic attack.

4. The way I understood the story is that I tried to put myself in their place and the story was a lot more clearer. Also that the story so far has had loads of drama because her cousin doesn't want anybody to get close to her so they can hurt her cause she has suffered enough.

                                                 Hack-To-School Questions

 1. The purpose of this course is English. So far we have been reading stories and writing and answering questions in our blogs. Also writing in our journals.

2. So far something new I've experienced in this course is that I got the opportunity to call a teacher doctor. That was something new for me because all my teachers have never gotten their doctors degree. Also the fact that at one point you were a college professor none of my teachers have been a college professor. Also something new I learned was blogging because at first I thought that it was going to be hard but now I've noticed that it's really easy. None of my teachers have made us do our homework and assignment in our blogs that's something new.

3. The most easiest thing I've done in this class is writing in our journals. It's the first thing we do in class before anything else. You basically write what you think but there is no right or wrong answer.

4. The most challenging experience I've had in this class was trying to memorize the poem of "Richard Cory". I would get the verses right but then I would forget. Trying to memorize the words then I would get messed up even though it was one word.

5. I will try to not fall behind because so far in this class I've noticed that in this class if you fall behind it's pretty hard to get back in place. I will try to do all the assignment and journals.

6. A Socratic Seminar is a formal discussion, based on a text, in which the leader asks open-ended questions.

                                             "The Conscience of a Hacker"
This story was sort of confusing to me. But anyways the only thing I understood was that he said that to the authorities that they think that curiosity is a crime. But its not. He then was saying he feels like he doesn't belong out there with other people cause they refer to him as a nerd and he felt like he belonged there.

                                           Respond to Richard Cory
My respond to Richard Cory is that the poem is trying to send a message because in the poem everybody thinks of Richard Cory as a happy person. But in reality he most likely had problems that provoked him to commit suicide. No one knew what he was hiding inside but everybody thought he was a happy man but that wasn't true most likely. This poem's mesage sounds a lot like a quote I heard on Instagram because the quote was "Be kind. Everybody is fighting a battle you don't know about." So that's what I believe is the message to this story.
                                                            Welcome Post

                                                           Ancient Stories
I would say that the language is different because nowadays not many people use complicated words as an everyday use. But at the same time I feel that the creatures speak a little more like we do now. The chief seems harder to understand because he puts his words in a different way it's probably because the way he thinks. But how the creatures talk is how I usually use my words. I think it's important for a story to be told or repeated word for word but at the same time I don't because I think it's OK to change up the story here and there but not all the time. But not like huge drastic changes to the story. But then if you hear a story for the 1st time you would like to hear the original story.
                                                       "The Earth on Turtle's Back"
I'm not sure what this story is trying to say but I feel like it's saying that there is always a new beginning. The reason I think this is because the characters talk about a new Earth and the women letting out the soil from her hand which then causes new trees to go. But I would like to know what happens next.
